A ROLL of the dice has landed Cameron Park’s Hannah Southwell a successful sporting career at age 15.

Southwell is about to wrap up her first season playing for the Newcastle Jets in the W-League.

She spent last year training with the squad and this year was the youngest goalie in W-League history.

It was only by chance Southwell ended up playing football.

She started out playing rugby sevens with the Kotara Bears when she was six.

When she was 12, Southwell decided to test the water in some other sports – six to be exact: athletics, basketball, cricket, football, softball and touch football.

She was selected for New Lambton Public School’s state PSSA football team in 2010.

“When I was little I never thought I’d like football, but I wouldn’t change anything now,” she said.

Southwell knew she wanted to be a goalkeeper from the outset.

“I knew I wasn’t going to be very good on my feet,” she said.

“Goalkeeping is almost a completely different sport itself.

“In some ways you’ve got to be better than the field players if you want to be your best.”

This year she pushed through hip flexor and rotator cuff injuries to give 100 per cent and help Newcastle to fifth with semi-finals this weekend.

But it’s not just her achievements with the Jets that have stamped Southwell as a star.

She was also a member of the Australian under-16 football squad in Malaysia in September, losing the grand final to South Korea, 1-nil.

Last month she helped the Australian under-20s team defeat Vietnam 2-nil in the Asian Football Championships.

The same week, Southwell became a first-time recipient of a Greater Building Society Olympic Sports Scholarship.

The Hunter Sports High School student will use the $2000 to travel to England if she makes the Combined High Schools Championships.

More holiday rental homes on the cards for Lake Macquarie

16/09/2019 Posted by admin

MORE holiday rentals could crop up in Lake Macquarie following a push from the council.
Nanjing Night Net

Lake Macquarie councillors voted unanimously on a proposal to loosen the criteria for short-term rental accommodation under the Lake Macquarie Local Environment Plan 2014, last Monday.

The council ruled houses with four bedrooms or fewer did not need development consent to be used as holiday rentals.

Previously, each holiday rental in a residential zone needed council approval.

There are 276 Lake Macquarie approved short-term rental accommodation properties listed on websites Stayz and Airbnb, which contribute $371 million into the local economy each year.

A council report said it had only received five complaints about these rentals in the past five years, “which indicates that the majority of holiday rentals are managed well and do not cause issues for their neighbours”.

Given these statistics, the report said larger properties had the potential to become “party houses” and would therefore need individual consideration.

The council will present its proposal to the Department of Planning within the next fortnight.

VOLUNTEER: Elaine Cusick sorts devotional items at St Vincent de Paul Society’s Mayfield op shop.EVERY Tuesday for the past 20 years, Elaine Cusick has applied her make-up and driven to St Vincent de Paul Society’s Mayfield op shop.

Mrs Cusick is a widow, a great grandmother and a devout Catholic, but above all, she is a volunteer.

The 81-year-old has been involved with the not-for-profit organisation since before its Church Street op shop opened in 1994.

She started out playing the piano at a local nursing home and helping to feed the homeless.

As she became known for her charity work, Mrs Cusick was approached by the then St Vincent de Paul Society president Neil McGoldrick and asked to volunteer at the Mayfield shop before it even opened.

Twenty years later, she is still there.

“St Vincent de Paul has been around forever and ever, just like me,” Mrs Cusick said.

“I’ve been happy coming here [to Mayfield] all these years because it gives me something to do.”

Mrs Cusick sources the shop’s devotional items and then sorts them for display.

This includes everything from brooches and communion souvenirs to prayer cards and rosary beads.

Mrs Cusick said you would be surprised how many people came looking for these items.

She knows most of these people by name, having worked at a gift shop in Mayfield for 30 years before she retired to volunteer for Vinnies.

The community is invited to join Mrs Cusick and staff to celebrate the Mayfield op shop’s 20th birthday tomorrow, Thursday, December 11, with a morning tea at 10.30am.

There will also be a half-price sale on everything except the devotional items.
