Parade of characters form challenging show

Altogether Drama students Clare and Matt in I Helen, I Hercules …I HELEN, I Hercules … is a fun and imaginative new theatre show from The Disability Trust’s Altogether Drama Group, which challenges our perceptions of who inspires us … and why.

Presented by The Disability Trust at the Wollongong Town Hall from December 11-13, I Helen, I Hercules … is the work of 15 individual emerging artists with a disability whose ages range between 14 and 60.

The work has been developed during weekly Altogether Drama classes throughout 2014.

Under the guidance of tutor and director Anne-Louise Rentell, participants developed their various characters through a process of showing, not telling, and have created a parade of pop stars, comedians, wrestlers, scientists, historical figures and mythological beings, each with their individual qualities of courage, genius, leadership and determination.

The Disability Trust’s weekly Altogether Drama classes are supported by Merrigong Theatre Company and the professional drama tutelage of Merrigong’s artistic associate Anne-Louise Rentell.

“This end-of-year show has been an exercise in developing the broader performance skills of the participants, whilst also enabling them to be active creators of the work,” Rentell said.

“An important element in the creation of this work has been to ensure that the performers have agency in and ownership of the work they are creating.

“Much of what is being presented in the show is a direct result of an expression of their own personalities, if not their own ideas.”

Altogether Drama was formed in 1991. Performance times are Thursday, December 11 at 11am, Friday, December 12 at 7.30pm, and Saturday, December 13 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
